Daemon - Definition
A Daemon is any program under a UNIX-type operating system that runs at all times. Unix systems run many daemons, chiefly to handle requests for services from other hosts on a network. Common daemons are servers (such as Apache or an FTP server) and schedulers (such as “cron”).
