File Type - Definition
A File Type is a designation, usually in the form of an extension (such as .gif, ,png or .jpg), given to a file to describe its function or the software that is required to act upon it. For instance, Microsoft Word documents use the .doc as well as the .docx file type. File Type is also referred to as File Extension.
